Contains articles on breeding carriage horses, "Thoroughbred Blood in the Trotter," "Concerning a New Trotting Register," "New Hampshire Horses," "American Trotting Sires" (a series), "How to Develop Speed" (a series), "The Story of Mambrino Chief;" letters from readers; race results, including the Maine State Fair; and more. Some Morgan blood appears in the horses mentioned throughout; includes an article on Vermont Black Hawk. Most of the texts are reprinted from periodicals such as Wallace's Monthly, California Spirit of the Times, National Live-Stock Journal, Turf, Field & Farm, and others. Some are original.
