Raulff, Ulrich. Farewell to the Horse: A Cultural History. Liveright 2018. 448p, many ills. from various sources. New hardcover in d.j. ** A wide-ranging, erudite study of "the myriad ways in which the horse shaped art, culture, and civilization, and its recent disappearance from the human story." Surveys first the horse's role in the "long 19th century" (Napoleon to World War I) and then focuses on its long decline from daily life. Emphasizes Europe; also American material. Well translated from German. Not a quick read, but very original and thought-provoking. Highly recommended.
