London: Edward Jeffrey and Son, 1820. Scott, J. Third edition (1st pub. 1733). Hardcover (cloth and half leather, spine gilt stamped). 92p + 1 pl. (engraved frontispiece). Opening pages foxed. Contemporary ink inscription at head of title page. Good. Item #11755

We know this of the author, in his own words: "My Work is plain and rural like its Author: My Science is gotten in green Fields, and has been my study as well as Exercise this 40 Years." After praising country life and sport, he turns to the question of whether rationality and sensibility exist in animals, seeking to prove they do not. In other words, a philosophical-religious defense of hunting, not a how-to treatise. The engraved frontispiece by J. Scott shows a medallion portrait of a man in profile, surrounded by game and hunting equipment. Engraved title page with a hunting vignette, fox mask, and hound head within a vine border.
