Manuel d'equitation [Sarasin copy]

1859. Adam, V. Gerhardt, A. Manuel d'equitation [etc.]. Paris: J. Dumaine 1859. 215p + many lithographed ills. after V. Adam on 12 pls. Quarter leather (rubbed). Foxed throughout; priced accordingly. The spine label mistakenly reads: Baucher. Ink names; from the renowned equestrian collection of Henry Sarasin, with his bookplate. In French. ** On the systematic training of saddle and cavalry horses. The title page continues: "Ou Essai d'une progression pour servir au dressage prompt et complet des chevaux de selle, et particulierement des chevaux d'armes, precede d'une analyse raisonnee du Baucherisme." This was Gerhardt's first book, based on Baucher and dedicated to him. Baucher's short printed text of thanks commends Gerhardt's analysis of his method. Gerhardt, then an instructor in the Imperial Guard and later at Saumur, was known for his work with difficult horses. He later disagreed with Baucher. (Mennessier de la Lance 1:543, Wells 2818).
