1903. Item #16989
Rau, William H. [stereo card publisher]. Prince Alert, a King among Light Harness Horses. Philadelphia, 1903. Sold by Universal View Co., Philadelphia and Lawrence, KS. Very good stereo card, printed in rich sharp tones. The back is plain. ** The title continues, "Mile Pacing Record made in 1903, 1 min. 57 seconds." King Alert made racing history when he became the first Standardbred to pace a mile in under 2 minutes while wearing hobbles. Hobbles were still controversial then; the photo shows boots and a contraption on his forelegs only. They didn't help him when he faced the free-pacing Dan Patch, however. Can be sent outside the US for less than the default shipping rate.
