Small pin- or staple holes in most margins and occasionally elsewhere. ** The exhibition featured over 100 of Verestchagin's large landscapes, military and biblical scenes, portraits, and the like; about 20 photographs of his earlier works, "chiefly relating to Central Asia" (not reproduced); and about 70 objects and decorative arts collected by the artist on his travels (not reproduced). Some of the paintings are illustrated in line engravings, and many have long descriptions. Together with two appendixes written by the artist: (1) Progress in Art and (2) Realism. Verestchagin (1842-1904) was especially known for his firsthand graphic depictions of war, which were sometimes considered too unsettling to exhibit or reproduce (e.g., the Russo-Turkish War).
