San Carlos lies between San Francisco and San Jose, in San Mateo County on the San Francisco Peninsula. Its oak- and eucalyptus-covered hills, part of the Coastal Range, roll over from El Camino Real toward the Pacific Ocean. Founded in 1888, by the mid-20th century it was turning from a rural community into an appealing commuter suburb that has lately benefited from the wealth in nearby Silicon Valley. This is a history of its development, civic and social clubs, schools, library, churches, personalities, etc., into the mid-60s. Probably written in large by Effie C. Mahany, historian for the San Carlos Villagers. Can be sent outside the US for less than the default shipping rate.
