Hoofbeats; The Great Horse Stories of John Taintor Foote
New York: Appleton-Century-Crofts, 1950. Weiler, M.C. Reprint. Hardcover. 243 pp., line ills. plus color jacket by M.C. Weiler. . Fair / fair. Item #30242
Lively vernacular horse racing stories, first published in magazines 1915-1921, and in book form in 1923. Not a scarce book, but of interest to book or reading historians because of the child's guessing game within--evidence of how children use books. "If my name you wish to see, look upon page sixty-three." Then "if my name you cannot find, look upon page 109." And so on for several pages. The answer is hidden under the back jacket flap. On front endpaper: "Black is the raven, blacker the rook, but blackest the cad who steals this book." All handwritten in ink, as well as the owner's name, 1952. Can be sent outside the US for less than the default shipping rate.
