The Justly Celebrated Stallion, Gold Dust; Season '98
Lehigh, Ind. Ter. [Oklahoma]: No stated publisher, 1898. No stated edition. Unbound sheet. One newsprint sheet advertising the services of the trotting stallion Gold Dust, "the best bred horse west of the Mississippi River." Ca. 11 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches. Good (4 closed tears, 1 mended; paper age browned). Item #30597
In the late 1800s Lehigh, located in coal country in Indian Territory, was a growing settlement. Speedy Gold Dust is represented by a large wood engraving, which is probably generic except that smoke (or oil?) seems to be streaming from a structure in the background. The horse's owner was apparently a (the?) doctor in town. A rare and striking survival.
