Private postal card portraying Samuel Chapman Armstrong. Armstrong commanded a regiment of the U.S. Colored Troops in the Civil War, co-founded the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute in 1868, and dedicated his life to Black education. This is a sort of "bounce-back" card to request a sample copy of The Southern Workman, "an illustrated monthly magazine devoted to the interests of undeveloped races" published by the Hampton Institute. Can be sent outside the US for less than the default shipping rate.
