Whitaker's Patent Spreader for Gaiting Trotters and Pacers

Torn at creases, most of which are neatly taped closed on the back. Photo shows top two-thirds of the sheet. Good. Item #31002

The top half of the flyer describes the device, which attaches to the shafts and sulky and separates the hindlegs. It was intended to keep horses at a “true open motion” and to prevent striking, scalping, etc. It was used for training and road work, and sometimes in races. The price from Whitaker was $10. The bottom half of the flyer prints dozens of testimonials from users, dated 1888 and 1889. J.H. Whitaker was also an important contractor and real estate developer in Davenport.
