Souvenir Stick Pins Honoring Chubby, Rochester's Last Fire Horse

[Rochester, NY]: No stated publisher, n.d. [ca. 1926]. First edition. Unbound cards. Lot of 10 metal stick pins, fastened to cards with four lines of verse. At the top is a low-relief horse head within a shield reminiscent of a fireman's badge. "Roch NY" is stamped on the back of some of them. The cards are age browned; the pins are overall very good (a few show traces of rust). Very good. Item #31109

These stick pins commemorate the retirement of Chubby, "Rochester's last fire horse, saved by the Rochester Dog Protective Association."  The verse reads, "Galloping Bravely as fire bells rang, | I was the hero of days gone by, | Now I am old and motors clang, | Here I may rest until I die. --Chubby."  Chubby was a beloved white Percheron, who was retired in 1926 at age 26. His death in 1933 was widely reported, and a plaque was erected in his honor. Priced and sold as a group of 10 (although the photo shows 12). .

Price: $50.00
