An appealing image of a cart horse, his handler, and an upturned cart. The caption continues, "Dumpling, the property of Messrs. Horne and Devey, to whom this plate is respectfully inscribed by the proprietors." The lettering on the cart reads "Farmer[?] Marshall," followed by a partly hidden date that ends "09." The plate was probably removed long ago from a book or journal that I haven't identified (perhaps one of John Lawrence's books, which aren't at hand to check). A mat would hide the marginal tears, and the picture would frame up nicely. It would make a good decorative gift for the work-horse lover in your life.
