Instruction pour la Cavalerie; sur le maniement le plus avantageux du sabre, publiee en 1796, par Schmidt, professeur d'escrime du corps royal des cadets a Berlin

Paris: Anselin, 1828. French edition. Soft cover (original wrappers, untrimmed, partly uncut). cccxxxiii, 84p + 8 folding engraved pls.; 30p of publisher's ads. In French. Very good (some cover wear). Item #4856

Translated from German by General Armand-Celeste de Durfort, who wrote and translated other works on the military arts of Prussia and Russia. His long historical treatise on the horse and its military use, "L'antiquite de l'art de s'escrimer a cheval," in fact dominates this work. The plates, all showing mounted saber exercises or combat, are by Ambroise Tardieu, the illustrator of many geographical and military books of the day. Long bibliography of works consulted. The only edition, and very scarce (5 copies in WorldCat, all in Europe except for 1 at Brown University).

Price: $250.00
