1907. Item #605
Christy, Eva. Modern Side-Saddle Riding: A Practical Handbook for Horsewomen. London: Vinton 1907. 3rd rev. ed. (1st pub. as Side Saddle Riding, 1899). 120p + 36 photos (tissue guard-sheet over frontispiece). Very good hardcover; no d.j. (as issued?). Fore-edges and opening pages lightly foxed. ** Although the author took pains to make this revision "in every way thoroughly modern," bibliographer Anne Grimshaw notes that this was one of the last pre-World War I sidesaddle manuals. This edition appeared "in the same year as Caprilli's system was adopted by the Italian Cavalry, a fact which was to help sound the virtual death knell of side-saddle riding as the only way for women to ride." Can be sent outside the U.S. for less than the default shipping rate. (Wells 1492).
