1905. Item #A6456
McLoughlin Brothers. Clever Hans. NY, 1905. Card game no. 390 1/2 with 24 cards printed in color--complete. Overall very good. In fair stained original box with mounted color illustration; sheet of rules laid in. ** Six cards show six different comic scenes of a circus performer applying horse tamer John Solomon Rarey's methods to two men in a horse suit. The other 18 cards, numbered 1 through 6, repeat the same geometric design. There are three cards for each number. The game capitalizes on the real horse Kluge Hans (Clever Hans), in Germany, whose feats of understanding and calculating were widely publicized at the time. Very scarce; not in WorldCat, and we have found only one old sale record, which is probably for this set.
