1924. Item #A6597
[Austin, Tex, and Charles B. Cochran, promoter and organizer]. First International Rodeo or Cowboy Championships. London, 1924. Three items: souvenir booklet (16p, several photos), program for June 16 (4p), and admission ticket. All very good (booklet creased down center). ** This two-week show at Wembley Stadium brought wild west riding to the heart of London--cowboys' and cowgirls' "bronk" riding, steer wrestling, fancy roping, cowgirls' trick and fancy riding, relay races, and more. Legendary rodeo cowgirl Vera McGinniss, in her trademark long pants, won two championships here. Sold with: Charles Simpson's book El Rodeo (London 1925), in which he chronicled and illustrated the rodeo, and described the bemused, not to say appalled, reaction of English horseman.
