Union of Russian Artists

Exhibition of Paintings [1905; typography by Vrubel]

Union of Russian Artists. Exhibition of Paintings. [Vystavka Kartin. "Soyuz Russkih Khudozhnikov." Moscow: K.A. Fisher 1905. No text; many b&w ills. on 32p, printed on rectos only. Overall poor to fair, but a scarce survival nonetheless. Front wrapper detached; lacks rear wrapper. A few tears to margins and guardsheets, not affecting content. ** The Union of Russian Artists was a Moscow-based group of painters and sculptors that separated themselves from Diaghilev's St. Petersburg-based Mir Iskusstva (World of Art). The works here are chiefly landscapes, interiors, and figures. The front cover and title page were designed by Mikhail Vrubel. The cover is green, printed in black and gold. The title page is a wonderful dense design of the artists' names, printed in black and red and tan paper. It is almost identical to Vrubel's poster for the 1901 exhibition of The 36 (the Union's original name), which is reproduced in The Twilight of the Tsars: Russian Art at the Turn of the Century (Hayward Gallery, 1991). $325.00[a] (Item ID: 1005083)
