Faust [1 of 400 copies, ill. by Karel Svolinsky]
Goethe, Johann Wolfgang

Goethe, Johann Wolfgang. Faust: Nach altester Aufzeichnung. Frankfurt am Main: "Der Goldene Brunnen" 1948. 126p + 7 pls. by Karel Svolinsky, some in color. Very good paper-covered boards (spine and strip on front cover lightly faded, corners lightly shelf-bumped). No. 106 of 400 copies. ** A beautifully printed letterpress edition of this early version of Faust, which is known as the Urfaust. It is taken from a transcription of Goethe's manuscript made in 1776. The colophon states that this is the first use of the typefaces Georg-Hartmann-Antiqua and -Kursiv, designed by Heinrich Jost, who also designed the book. The book was published to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Georg Hartmann's taking over the Bauer type foundry in Frankfurt. The large offset plates reproduce Svolinksy ink-and-wash drawings. Accompanied by a 16-page text, "Die Entstehung von Goethes 'Urfaust'" by Ernst Beutler, laid in. A lovely edition, suitable for a gift. (Item ID: 1005697)
