Aehrenlese auf dem Felde der Kunst [etc.]: Originalhandzeichnungen
Weigel, J.A.

[Weigel, J.A.] Aehrenlese auf dem Felde der Kunst: Eine ausfuhrliche Beschreibung von Originalhandzeichnungen und Nadelarbeiten der Maler, Kupferstichen und in Holz geschnittenen Werke. Erst Abtheilung: Originalhandzeichnungen. Leipzig, 1836. 128p + 1 folding plate. Good hardcover. Original or contemporary boards. Spine chipped; front hinge tender. Dampstain to top margins, including the plate. Some foxing, chiefly confined to a few pages. Four old library stamps to title page, and one to first catalogue page. ** Comprises a descriptive list of hundreds of original drawings in various collections, grouped by national school and then by artist, from the 16th to 19th centuries (and a few earlier). Weigel's aim is to establish a comprehensive reference to master drawings, of the sort that exists for prints. He laments the fact that there are few catalogues of drawings, even though some artists are known only through these works. The folding plate reproduces an early iamge of Christ with symbols of the Passion. This is Part 1 (of 3, complete in itself). The 3 parts were published from 1836 to 1845; parts 2 and 3 covered prints. All parts are scarce. WorldCat gives only one location in the U.S. (Getty, parts 1 and 2 only). (Item ID: 1005734)
