The first half of the book relates the history and survival in cultural memory of the Durham Ox, including "its remarkable life as a travelling exhibition." The ox was as famous in its time as was the racehorse Eclipse. The second half reprints in facsimile the very rare 1807 pamphlet by John Day, "An Account of the Late Extraordinary Durham Ox."
