We're delighted to announce that we'll be taking part in the Attingham Trust Study Programme, "The Horse and the Country House," in England in September. We have in stock some of the books on the program's suggested reading list. A selection of them, plus others that may be of interest, are included in "Featured Books" at the bottom of this page. Quantities are very limited. For other titles related to the program's theme, search by the keyword Attingham, or go to "Browse Horses" and then look through the topics Art, Driving (especially other World on Wheels volumes), Farming, Horses in Society & History, and Hunting. We're happy to ship postpaid to Attingham participants within the United States.

Shelburne Farms Stud [English Hackneys, Harness and Saddle Horses]
Webb, Wm. Seward

Webb, Wm. Seward; A.H.G. Shelburne Farms Stud (Shelburne, Chittenden County, Vermont) of English Hackneys, Harness and Saddle Horses, Ponies and Trotters. NY: Putnam 1893. 98p + 16 horse portraits by various artists, and photos. Fair hardcover (covers quite stained, edges rubbed; foxed). Binding sturdy. Further condition details on request. ** This is the expanded, illustrated edition of this elaborate book on Shelburne Farms. The first part, by A.H.G., describes the grounds and buildings, including the breeding barn, famous for its vast unsupported interior space . The second part lists 128 horses and ponies--from top Hackneys and trotting horses (Matchless of Londesboro', Almont Wilkes, White Socks, etc.) to the farm's everyday saddle, carriage, and work horses. Descriptions, show records, and pedigrees are given for the leading horses. This book may have been inspired by The Brookfield Stud Hackney catalogue of England, which it resembles. (The earlier, shorter version exists but may have been withdrawn from distribution.). (Item ID: 15085)
