The Plattsburger [Paul Brown's first book appearance]
U.S. Army

U.S. Army. The Plattsburger. [Plattsburg, NY]: The Plattsburger 1917. 240p, many photos, line ills. (1 in color), and ads. Good hardcover (corners bumped, edges rubbed); no d.j. (probably as issued). ** This yearbook of a World War I officers' training camp is "generally believed to be Brown's first published work.... [He] is listed on page 140 as one of the many contributors, and he is presumably pictured in the large group photo there" (Biscotti). His drawings and cartoons are signed "P.D. Brown, 175th Co." or just "B." His style is still evolving but its action, spontaneity, and line are already unmistakable. One full-page plate by Brown, tinted in brown, portrays "The Plattsburger" soldier--his measurements, appearance, etc. Other drawings in the yearbook are by Bud Fisher, later the creator of Mutt and Jeff. (Item ID: 16007)
