[Boston]: [C.S.E. Cassino and E.K. Dunbar], n.d. [1881-1882]. Scott Leighton, N.W. First edition. Unbound. Original chromolithograph from The Celebrated Horses of America, printed by Armstrong & Co. Mounted on old board, with old hand-lettered title. Overall ca. 17 x 14 inches, image ca. 15 x 11 inches. Fair (scraped, rubbed). Item #30791

The Celebrated Horses of America was a lavish collection of chromolithographed portraits of 24 running and trotting horses "from paintings by the best artists." This may show Black Cloud, "one of the most famous sires of trotters and fine roadsters in the Middle West for many years. . . . He was an incestuously inbred Morgan, being by Vermont Black Hawk 5 out of one of his own daughters" (John Hervey, The American Trotter). Scott Leighton was a Boston-based artist whose works were often reproduced by Currier & Ives. Scarce in any condition; WorldCat locates very few complete sets of the portfolio. Shipping/handling will be extra; please keep this in mind when ordering.
