Baillie-Grohman presents a wide range of sporting art--paintings, drawings, prints, book illustrations, tapestries--with many unusual examples. In the preface he compares the "decadent and cruel kinds of sport to which the Germans were addicted in the eighteenth century" to German "slaughter" in World War I. With biographies of the major artists. The emphasis is on shooting, fowling, stag hunting, angling, even mountaineering. Except for Ridinger's manege scenes, horses are represented chiefly in secondary roles. Though the illustrations are dark, this was a sumptuous production for its day, and this copy is in better condition than often found. (Wells 467) Heavy; shipping/handling will be extra.
