L'Instruction du roy is an expanded version of the 1623 edition of Le Maneige royal. The advice on care and horsemanship is much the same and is still presented as a dialogue between Pluvinel and the young Louis XIII. There are two new sections, both by ecuyer Du Breuil Pompee, on the qualities of education, deportment, virtue, etc., that a nobleman must possess and on basic information that he will need to school horses on his own. Because of these additions and some changes to the main text, the French scholar Hilda Nelson believes L'Instruction du roy is of more interest than Le Maneige royal. A beautiful copy, good for a gift. (Wells 5865 cites an earlier Olms reprint) Large and heavy; shipping/handling will be extra. Please keep this in mind when ordering.
