Sixteen tales of horses, dogs, cats, a donkey, and an elephant, and the role of abuse or humane treatment in their lives. The stories are seemingly based on Ensign's own experiences, dramatized and perhaps lightly fictionalized for effect. Browne's introductory memoir of the author recounts his varied career and his longtime support of animal rights.
